WICHITA, Kan. - Newman University scored two goals in the final 11:18 of the match to stun No. 7 Drury with a 3-2 victory in a non-conference match here on Friday night.
The Panthers, who fell to 8-2-0, had pulled out of a 1-1 halftime tie with a goal by sophomore Micah Whorton (assists to Jake Allison and Steve Wilczewski) at 58:31 for a 2-1 advantage.
But the host Jets (5-5-1) rallied with goals at 78:42 by Brian Alvarez to tie it, then took the lead for good when Ty Wisener scored four minutes later on a breakaway.
The banged-up Panthers, who were playing without injured starting goalkeeper Logan Hoffman (leg) and key sophomore defender Ben Taylor (card violation), did receive a team-leading 10th goal of the season from Wilczewski in the first half.
Drury lost despite outshooting Newman 16-5, including 10-3 in the second half.
The Panthers return to action Sunday, visiting No. 18 Rockhurst in Kansas City for a key Great Lakes Valley Conference match at 2:30 p.m.
