HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Drury swept a doubleheader from Alabama-Huntsville on Sunday, beating the Chargers in the opener 11-6 and 10-5 in the nightcap here at Joe Davis Stadium.
Drury scored nine runs in the final three innings to outscore UAH 11-6 for the game one victory and used 14 hits to sweep Huntsville in the nightcap.
Both teams are now 2-2 on the season..
In the opener, the Panthers, down 3-0 through three innings, plated two in the fourth on a two-run homer by Joel Potts to cut the Charger lead to 3-2.
UAH tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend its lead to 5-2. But an RBI single by Dane Hughes in the top of the sixth scored Harrison Waters to cut the Alabama-Huntsville lead to 5-3. A pinch-hit RBI ground out by Jason Hall scored Hughes to draw the Panthers within a run (5-4) entering the bottom of the sixth.
Drury reliever Sam Pirtle came in and struck out the side in the bottom of the sixth to keep the Panthers close.
In the top of the seventh Waters singled to load the bases. Then, with two outs, an RBI single by Hughes put Drury up 6-5 entering the bottom of the seventh.
The Chargers tied it up in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Shannon Anderson to force extra innings.
The Panthers went up for good in top of the eighth with back-to-back singles by Kendall Findley and R.J. Knese. A one out walk to Joe Rohlfing loaded the bases for Tyler Goss, who was also walked to drive in the Panthers go-ahead run in the top of the eighth.
A Waters grand slam sealed the deal for the 11-6 Panther victory. Pirtle earned the win for DU.
In the Panthers' 16-hit performance, Waters had four hits and four RBIs, Hughes had three hits and three RBIs and Findley had three hits.
In the second game, Drury jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Rohlfing knocked an RBI single and later scored on a passed ball.
UAH scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first to make it 2-1, but the Panthers had a big third inning with an RBI single by Tyler Goss and a two-run homer by Waters to stretch their lead to 5-1.
Huntsville added a run in the third, but Drury struck again in the top of the fourth when Tyler Wright led off with a triple and was driven home by Bret Gallion making it 6-2 DU.
The Panthers put it out of reach in the top of the sixth when Rohlfing doubled to score two and a Goss RBI single put Drury up 9-2. A Courtney Spitz sacrifice fly drove home the Panthers final run.
The Chargers pushed across three runs in the seventh, but could draw no closer as the Panthers took game two by a final score of 10-5.
Drury posted 14 hits in the nightcap and Rohlfing had three hits, three RBIs and two runs.
Carl Teghtmyer got the win and went six innings, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out three and walking one.
Drury returns to action on Saturday, February 14 when the Panthers will travel to Ouachita Baptist for two nine-inning games with the opener scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
