The Drury baseball team pounded out 19 hits to pick up a 14-5 victory over Wayne State in nine innings at Meador Park on Thursday.
Tyler Goss put Drury up 4-0 with a grand slam off the scoreboard in left center in the third. The offense continued in the third when Jason Hall doubled to score two more DU runs and make it 6-0. Wayne State scored three runs on four hits in the fourth to cut the Drury lead to 6-3.
An RBI triple by Maury Wilmes and an RBI single by R.J. Knese in the fifth extended the lead to 8-3. The Warriors Paul LaMantia homered in the sixth before Drury’s Dane Hughes returned the favor with a homer to center in the Panther sixth. In the seventh Drury tacked on two more runs on a Joe Rohlfing RBI triple and a Wayne State error. A three run homer by DU sophomore catcher Courtney Spitz made it 14-5 in the eighth.
Knese went 4-for-5 and scored two runs. Dane Hughes, Rohlfing and Maury Wilmes each had three hits. Goss had four RBIs on the grand slam. Wayne State had seven hits.
Wixson went six innings, struckout eight and earned the win to improve to 1-1 this season.
The Warriors of Wayne State fell to 3-7 and Drury improved to 6-6.
The Drury baseball team will host Wayne State again at 6 p.m. Friday at Meador as part of the three-day Heffington Optical Invitational, which for the Panthers also includes games at 6 p.m. Saturday against Bemidji State and at 5 p.m. Sunday against Washburn.
