Perkins Singles Home two in 9th to Give Panthers 7-6 win in Second Round of GLVC Tournament

A two RBI single up the middle by Nic Perkins in the bottom of the ninth gave the Drury baseball Panthers a 7-6 victory over Bellarmine in the second round game of the GLVC Tournament at U.S. Baseball Park on Friday.

The Panthers, the West Division champions in the GLVC, improved to 35-17, and will play tomorrow at 4 p.m. vs. the winner of game 10.  Bellarmine falls to 34-18, and will face Saint Joseph's at 9 a.m. on Saturday in Game nine of the tournament.

The Knights struck first, with a pair of back to back RBI singles in the top of the third, and an RBI single in the fourth for an early 3-0 lead.  Caleb Essick cut the Bellarmine lead to one run in the fourth, with a single to right center to plate KK Daniel and Ryan Kayhill.  With the bases loaded, Clayton Engel smashed a double off the wall in right center to drive in three, and finish off a five run Panther fourth.

Drury kept the Knights off the board for three consecutive innings, before an RBI single by Chris Allen in the eighth cut the Panther lead to a run.  With one out and a runner on third in the top of the ninth, Zac Wiley cracked his ninth homer of the season to give the Knights a 6-5 lead.

The Panthers started off the bottom of the ninth with an Essick walk and a bunt single by Justin Abernathy.  Engel then did his job with a sacrifice bunt to advance runners to second and third, followed by intentional walk to Ryan Colombo to load the bases.  Perkins, who went 4 for 5 on the day, then singled up the middle to plate Essick and Abernathy and give the Panthers a 7-5 win.

Drury was outhit by the Knights 16-10, but the Knights left eight runners on base to the Panthers five. Wiley went 3 for 4, drove home two RBIs, and scored two runs for Bellarmine.

Alex Stilwell (5-1) got the win and faced two batters in 0.2 innings.  Wiley (1-3) received the loss for the Knights, and faced just one batter.

The tournament continues with play Saturday morning through Sunday. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for students, and $5 for children, while kids 5 and under are free. The GLVC is also offering an All-Tournament pass for $35.
