Varela set a new school record in the 800 meters with her time of 2:17.46 in finishing fourth last Friday in the Bob Laptad/Bill Williams Invitational hosted by Missouri Southern State University in Joplin. A week earlier, she won the 1,500 meters at the Dewey Allgood Invitational in Rolla.
