Drury University Athletics

Edsel Matthews follows Bill Harding and A.L. Weiser in becoming the third administrator/coach to be inducted into the Hall. Matthews came to Drury in the fall of 1967 and was Bill Harding's assistant coach for four seasons before taking over the basketball program in 1971-72. Matthews was the Panthers' head coach for the next seven seasons and was also the program's athletic director his last year at Drury. His overall coaching record was 120-79 and his 1977-78 team was ranked #1 in the nation; was a quarterfinalist in the NAIA national tournament; and, finished with a 29-4 overall record. Matthews was also the 1978 NAIA National Coach-of-the-Year.
