Carter came to Drury in the fall of 1977 and quickly became a key ingredient for dominant Panther basketball teams the remainder of his career, including DU's NAIA national championship winner that finished 33-2 in 1978-79. The Eagle Rock, Calif., native led that title squad in rebounding with an average of 8.2 per game that season, but averaged nearly double-figures on the boards to go with 14.2 points per game in the national tournament. Equally important as the numbers was the emotion Carter played with on the floor, evident by the fact that "Jolly" captured the Hustle Award for the national tourney that year. Carter, who helped the 1977-78 Panthers to a 29-4 record, No. 1 ranking in the nation at the end of the regular season and eventually to the quarterfinals of the NAIA national tourney that season, helped DU to a 62-6 record in his two seasons. He graduated from Drury with a degree in Physical Education.
