LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Drury gave unbeaten, sixth-ranked Angelo State fits for 36 minutes before the Rams pulled away late for a 92-80 victory over the Panthers in the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic Friday afternoon at the South Point Casino Arena.
Drury trailed 77-76 with 4:30 remaining before Angelo State (11-0) finished the game on a 15-4 run to send the short-handed Panthers - with only nine players dressed out due to injury - to their fourth loss in nine games.
Kameron Bundy and
Drew Moore led the way for the Panthers with 15 points each, while
Joshua Palmer added 12 points,
Tevin Foster 11 points and freshman
Grant Boswell had 10 points off the bench for Drury.Â
A Drury squad with big men
Allen Hyatt,
Douglas Moore and
Nadir Alston sidelines with injuries saw Angelo claim a 45-32 advantage on the boards, including a 16-3 cushion in offensive rebounds.
"Hats off to Angelo ... they're off to a great start, and they finished the game better than we did," Drury coach
Steve Hesser said. "We had some really, really sloppy turnovers down the stretch that have nothing to do with talent. What we're trying to impress upon our young men is you've got to eliminate errors in the game that have nothing to do with talent.
"But the main thing - and we're not a program that makes excuses - but we've got three forwards available to us, and we're just getting annihilated on the backboards. Today, we got beat by 13 (rebounds) ... and the difference in offensive rebounds, to me, is the most critical. We've given up 22 and 16 offensive boards the last two games, and you just can't keep giving your opponent extra possessions. We've got to find somebody who wants to rebound ... if that doesn't get corrected, it's going to be really hard to win basketball games."
Stedman Allen had 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Rams from the Lone Star Conference, while Indiana State transfer guard Tre Bennett had 19 points, eight assists and five rebounds.
Â
Grant BoswellBoswell hit 4 of 6 shots, including two of his three 3-point tries, to help provide quality minutes while Bundy battled foul woes.Â
"He's been someone since the first game we played that hasn't been scared of the moment," Hesser said of Boswell. "He probably makes our offense better when he's out there because he's got basketball IQ and you have to guard him at the 3, so your spacing is a lot better."
Hesser also praised the work of Moore, who hit 6 of 8 field goals and all three of his 3-point tries as Drury went 13 of 24 from behind the arc.
"I thought
Drew Moore had his best game as a Panther," Hesser said.
Drury will conclude its stop at the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic on Saturday, squaring off against No. 7 Tarleton State in a 3 p.m. (CST) start. Tarleton played Rollins in Friday's later game.
