Panthers Outlast Saints 82-78 To Start GLVC Play 2-0 With Road Win

CHESTERFIELD, Mo. - Kameron Bundy went 6-of-7 from 3-point range and scored 26 points to lead four Panthers in double-figures and Drury to an 82-78 victory over Maryville in their Great Lakes Valley Conference men's basketball matchup Saturday afternoon at the Moloney Arena.

In his most complete game of the year, Bundy made 9 of 13 shots overall, added six assists, five rebounds and two steals in 39 minutes as the Panthers completed a 2-0 swing through St. Louis to move to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in GLVC play.

Maryville fell to 2-6 and 0-2.

"How we pulled it out, I don't know ... we did make some plays down the stretch," Drury coach Steve Hesser said. "They shot 72 percent in the second half ... I thought we really got out and defended Thursday night (in a win at UMSL). And then we had 11 turnovers at halftime, and we only had two in the second half, so those were the keys.

"Bundy and Tevin carried the mail for us offensively, and I don't know that I can say anyone carried the mail for us defensively.

"But to come on the road and get two wins, coming off (two losses) last weekend ... an old coach told me a long time ago, 'it's never as good as you think it is when it's going good, and it's never as bad as you think it is when it's going bad.' We've got a lot of work to do, but let's don't give up on the Panthers yet. We are making some improvement in areas ... got to go to work next week and take care of business in the classroom and then get ready to go to S&T next Saturday."

Drury was clinging to a 71-67 lead with two minutes to play, then helped seal the deal when Bundy, with the shot clock approaching zero, hit his sixth 3-pointer of the game with 1:30 left to give the Panthers a seven-point advantage.

Drury got a free throw from Josh Palmer, two free throws from Lucciano Gamiz, another from Drew Moore and a final pair from Bundy - with 18.5 seconds left to push the lead to five - to close out the Saints.

Marvin Grant-Clark hit a 3-pointer with four seconds left to pull Maryville within two (80-78), then was whistled for an intentional foul immediately after to send Moore back to the line. The St. Louis area native calmly sank both to push the DU lead to 82-78.

Tevin Foster finished with 20 points (on 8 of 12 shooting), while Moore and Jamal Cummings added 11 points each off the bench for the Panthers, who had to withstand a strong, late rally from the Saints, who shot 72 percent (21 of 29) from the field in the second half and finished at 57 percent (33 of 58) for the game.

That included a 10-for-19 showing for Maryville from behind the 3-point line; Drury was 10-for-17 on 3-point tries, as Bundy and Foster combined to hit 9 of 11 tries from behind the arc.

Moore finished with six rebounds and added three assists and three big free throws down the stretch for the Panthers.

Drury led 30-28 at the half, paced by nine points from Bundy and seven off the bench from Cummings.

Forrester Sims had 20 points and Grant-Clark finished with 19 points for the Saints, who got 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds from Max Mischkulnig.

The Panthers will break for final exams next week before returning to GLVC play next Saturday with a 3 p.m. start at Missouri S&T in Rolla. Drury will then play national powers Angelo State and Tarleton State Dec. 18-19 in Las Vegas at the South Point Casino Holiday Hoops Classic.
