CHESTERFIELD, Mo. - No. 6 Drury used an 18-0 run in the third quarter to break open a tight game and go on to an 80-47 victory over Maryville in a Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup Saturday afternoon at Moloney Arena.
Drury (7-0, 2-0 in the GLVC) was tied with the Saints (5-2, 1-1) at 31-all at the half. But the Lady Panthers put the clamps on Maryville defensively in the third period, outscoring the Saints 25-8 as part of what eventually became a 30-4 run that blew the game wide open.
Drury led 56-39 after three periods and outscored the Saints 24-8 in the final period to win going away.
"I think (at halftime) we knew that they hadn't seen Drury Lady Panthers basketball ... that defensive pressure we applied in the third quarter was the game-changer," Drury coach
Molly Miller said. "I'm so proud of the way this team came out and got after it defensively. That's the kind of effort we want to see night in and night out."
Annie Armstrong led the Lady Panthers with 16 points, adding five rebounds and five assists in her 29 minutes of court time.
Alice Heinzler added 12 points and
Hannah Dressler had 10 points and a team-high six rebounds as Drury matched the taller Saints 38-all on the boards for the contest.
Heather Harman had nine points, six assists and five rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench and freshman
Adrienne Horn - a St. Louis native playing collegiately in front of the home fans for the first time - added five points, three rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots and a steal in 22 minutes off the bench.
"It was a fun homecoming for Adrienne ... getting to play in front of family and friends and get some great GLVC experience on the road," Miller said. "It's never easy to come out with two wins in St. Louis. I know that first-hand (as a player). To come out and have a statement game like this is good for our confidence, and something we can really build upon in the next couple of weeks."
Drury finished at 51 percent for the game (28 of 55), including a blistering 64-percent shooting effort in the second half (18 of 28). Meanwhile, the Lady Panthers held Maryville to 28 percent shooting at home (16 of 58), including a 1-for-18 effort from behind the 3-point line.
Alex Hillyer had 12 points and nine rebounds and Jordynn Martin added 11 points for Maryville.
Drury will break for final exams next week before returning to the court next Saturday for a 1 p.m. GLVC tipoff at Missouri S&T in Rolla. The Lady Panthers will then play host to Arkansas Tech on Tuesday, December 15th in the second annual Hiland Dairy Kids Day game at The O' (11 a.m. start) before heading to Melbourne, Fla., to play Tampa and host Florida Tech in a two-day event December 19-20.
