Panthers regular season tips off vs Ottawa (Kan.)
The Drury Panthers start the regular season on Friday as they take on Ottawa (Kan.) at 7 p.m. in the O'Reilly Family Event Center.
Â
Drury returns seven lettermen and two full-time starters from a team that went 18-10 last season and head coach
Steve Hesser enters his 14th campaign leading the program.
Â
Ottawa is off to a 0-4 start and is coming off of a loss at home to Missouri Valley 86-83 on Tuesday. The Braves, an NAIA
program and part of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Association, went 14-17 last season.
Â
Friday's game marks the first meeting between the two teams since 1964 when the Panthers won 99-79 in Weiser Gym. Ottawa has won four of the six previous meetings with games played between 1949 and 1964.
Â
The Panthers will be looking to extend an opening-day winning streak that dates back 14 seasons. Drury's last season-opening loss was to Nebraska-Kearney 103-79 on Nov. 23, 2002. The Panthers have never started the season with a loss under head coach
Steve Hesser and last year's team went 5-0 in the month of November.
Â
Up next for the Panthers is the Bank of Bolivar Highway 13 Catfight at Southwest Baptist on Tuesday, Nov. 14. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m. in Bolivar.
