EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The ninth-ranked Drury Lady Panthers had their 12-game winning streak snapped as the East Division leader of the Great Lakes Valley Conference, Southern Indiana, handed Drury an 84-78 loss in Evansville, Indiana on Saturday.
Both teams ended the day with identical records. Drury and Southern Indiana went to 20-3 and 12-1 in the GLVC.
The Screaming Eagles shot 56 percent from the field going 33 for 58 from the floor. It was the best shooting performance by a Drury opponent this season. Tanner Marcum led Southern Indiana with a game-high 24 points while Hannah Wascher had 20 and Kaydie Grooms added 18.
"Early on, we were praying and hoping the ball would go in instead of just rising up and shooting it," said Drury head coach
Molly Miller. "We had a little hesitancy. I just thought Southern Indiana showed a lot of maturity with the way they didn't make the same mistake twice. I thought maybe our lack of experience showed in this game."
Briana Jones led the Lady Panthers with 17 points.
Hailey Diestelkamp had her eighth double-double of the year with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Drury shot 43 percent from the floor going 27 for 63 and 8 for 24 from three-point range.
The loss is Drury's first defeat since Dec. 7 when they fell at Arkansas Tech. Saturday's loss also ended a GLVC regular season winning streak that had reached 25 games. The Lady Panthers hadn't lost in the conference regular season since a 54-48 loss at Wisconsin-Parkside on Jan. 9, 2016.
Drury returns home for their next game when the Lady Panthers host McKendree on Thursday, Feb. 9 at the O'Reilly Family Event Center. Tipoff is 5:45 p.m. and tickets can be ordered by calling 417-873-6389.
