Drury Baseball Takes 3 of 4 from Missouri S&T in Opening GLVC Series

OZARK - In day two of their series, Drury and Missouri S&T split a GLVC pair with Drury getting past S&T in the opener 16-12, before losing the nightcap 8-5.  Freshman leadoff hitter Caleb Essick went 6 for 8 on the day, scored six runs, and had a RBI.

In the seven-inning opener, Drury jumped all over the Miners in the first inning scoring eight runs on eight hits for an 8-1 lead.  

Freshman Riley Herron had a two-RBI pinch-hit double, and Avery Jennings singled to left to score Herron, making it 11-1 after two innings. 

Drury added a run in the third inning on a RBI single by Nic Perkins and tacked on a pair in the fourth coming on a RBI single by Ryan Colombo and a RBI triple by Shane Benes.  S&T scored two runs in each of the fourth and fifth, then added three more in the sixth to cut the Panthers lead to 14-8. 

RBI hits in the sixth by freshmen Cole Dunham (double) and Clayton Engel finished off a season-high 20 hit effort for a 16-8 lead.  S&T would not go quietly, scoring four runs on three hits, and an error in the seventh.

Essick went 3 for 3, scored three runs, and had a RBI.  Benes went 3 for 4, scored two runs, and had two RBI's. 

Austin Simms (3-1) earned the win in 5.2 innings on the mound. Luke Marcheschi (2-3) received the loss allowing six hits, seven earned runs, and throwing a 1/3 of an inning.

In the nightcap, the Miners scored a pair of first-inning runs and added one in the second for a 3-0 lead. 
RBI singles by Perkins and Colombo in the third cut the Missouri S&T lead to a run. 

S&T stretched their lead out to a 6-2 margin after the top of the sixth before Drury cut the lead to 6-4 in the bottom half of the inning.  RBI singles in the seventh and eighth innings would seal the game for the Miners.  Colombo doubled in the seventh to score Essick for the Panthers final run of the day. 

Both Drury and Missouri S&T finished with 12 hits.  Colombo went 3 for 4 with two RBI's, and scored a run.  Essick was 3 for 5 and scored three runs.  The Miners were led by leadoff hitter Eli Miller, who went 4 for 4 with three runs and a RBI.

Trey Faulconer (0-1) received the loss in 3.2 innings of action.  Dan Borek (2-2) threw five innings and posted five strikeouts to earn the win. 

The Panthers moved to 15-7 and 3-1 in the league while Missouri S&T went to 10-12 and 1-3 in the GLVC.
 
Drury plays again on Tuesday when they take on Central Missouri in a non-conference contest in Warrensburg.  Game time is at 6 p.m.
