JOPLIN – Drury softball earned a split at the Teri Mathis-Zenner Memorial Tournament on Sunday. The Panthers downed Northeastern State 7-4 in the opener, before dropping a 5-0 decision to host Missouri Southern.
Both the Panthers and Northeastern State move to (7-9), with Missouri Southern now (8-13).
Paige Gann, got the RiverHawks on the board in the opener, with a home run to left in the opening frame. After a scoreless second, Drury took the lead in the bottom of the third, when
Kaelie Smith doubled to score two, and
Taylor Ellestad singled home Smith.
Northeastern State kept things close, cutting the Panther lead to 3-2, with Haley Acrey doubling in a run in the fourth. Ellestad, a senior transfer from Cottage Grove, Wisconsin, singled for her second RBI of the contest in the fifth.
Dominique Salinas, hit a 2 RBI single to cap off a three run, four hit fifth inning.
Both teams crossed runs in the sixth, the RiverHawks via RBI sacrifice fly, and Drury coming on a swipe of home by
Kelley Conway, to extend the DU lead to 7-3. Jess Schuler hit a solo shot for Northeastern in the seventh.
Jessica Kjeldgaard (4-5) earned the win, and put in a solid game performance on the mound, pitching a complete game with a season-high seven strikeouts. Taryn Gray (1-3) received the loss for the RiverHawks, allowing five earned runs in four innings.
Smith and Ellestad paced the Panther offense, both going 2 for 4 with two RBI's. Smith also scored two runs, and Ellestad scored once. Sierra Crick went 2 for 4, and scored two runs to lead the RiverHawks, who finished with six hits.
In the nightcap, Missouri Southern scored four of their five runs in the opening inning, two of those runs coming on a wild pitch and a passed ball. Myranda Stewart, who went 3 for 4 in the Lions 10 hit effort, singled in the sixth for the Lions final tally.
Mikaela Cox (2-1), got the shutout win for Southern pitching a complete game.
Destiny Bolen (3-4) received the loss, and allowed four earned runs in 2.2 innings, with three strikeouts.
The Panthers will travel to Clermont, Florida next weekend, for six games at the Spring Games Tournament on Saturday through Monday. On Saturday, Drury will face Grand Valley State and Findlay, members of the GLIAC Conference, with games at 7 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.
