Panthers play to split with Rockhurst to close GLVC series

Drury earned a GLVC split vs. Rockhurst, falling 5-1 in the opener, before a dropped fly ball led to two runs, and a 4-3 win in the nightcap at US Baseball Park Monday.

In the seven inning opener, the Hawks took the initial lead with an RBI walk in the opening frame.  Drury countered in the bottom half of the second on an RBI groundout by Dylan Bradshaw to plate Nic Perkins.  Rockhurst went back on top in the third on a sacrifice fly to right.

The Hawks extended their lead to 3-1 in the fifth on an RBI double by Seth Soto to left center, and tacked on two runs in the seventh for a 5-1 final.

Ryan Kayhill went 3 for 3 with a pair of singles, and a double to pace the Panther offense.  Brett Marr, the Hawks leadoff hitter, went 3 for 4, and scored three runs.  Rockhurst outhit the Panthers by a 6-5 tally and both teams left six runners on base.

Andrew Ellwanger (4-5) earned the win, allowing just one Panther run and going the distance.  Austin Simms (4-4) received the loss, going six innings, and allowing five earned runs, while walking four.

In the nightcap, Drury got on the board first on an RBI groundout by Devan O'Bryan, that scored Perkins in the second.  With two outs in the third, a double by the Hawks Corbin Hare scored two, and gave Rockhurst their first lead.

After four scoreless innings, Soto hammered a long shot to left center to drive home the Hawks third run and make it 3-1.  In the Panther eighth, Ryan Colombo hustled around and past the first baseman on an infield single to plate Clayton Engel, who led off the inning with a triple to right center.  To cap off the eighth, O'Bryan hit a routine fly ball to right field that was dropped, resulting in two runs scoring (Perkins and Kayhill) and giving the Panthers a 4-3 victory.

Justin Abernathy went 2 for 3 for the Panthers, Perkins was 2 for 4 and scored two runs, and Engel went 2 for 4 and scored a run.  Drury outhit the Hawks 9-8, with both teams committing two errors, and leaving seven runners on base.

Alex Austin (3-2) allowed one hit and struck out one in two innings of relief for the win.  Jacob Thigpen (0-3) gets the loss for the Hawks, and allowed nine hits, four runs (two earned), and had a pair of strikeouts.

The Panthers will host Marvyille on Saturday and Sunday, with GLVC doubleheaders beginning at noon each day.
