DU Softball Drops Two in Regular Season Finale at Lewis

CROWN POINT, Ind. – Lewis swept a GLVC doubleheader against the Drury softball Panthers winning the opener 4-1, and taking the nightcap 2-1 at the Sparta Dome.  Drury ends the season with a 19-36 overall record, and went 6-24 in the GLVC.  Lewis improved to 26-25 overall, and 14-16 in the league.

In the opener, Kari Hillenburg led off the game with a single, the 200th hit of her career, and later scored on an error in the opening frame.   That run made Hillenburg the all-time runs leader (114), breaking Amber Hayden's mark of 113.  Lewis scored their first three runs on RBI singles, coming in the first, third, and sixth innings.  They tacked on a RBI double in the sixth to make it a 4-1 final.

Lewis was able to get 13 hits off Jessica Kjeldgaard (10-19), with Emily Gurske going 3 for 4, and scoring two runs in the two hole for the Flyers.  Lewis left 11 runners on base and Drury left three, with each team committing an error.

Earning the win was Dara Sanders (18-9), who had eight strikeouts in the circle, and allowed just three Panther hits, and one unearned run.

In the nightcap, an RBI single by Kaelie Smith in the third scored Hillenburg for the first run.  Destiny Bolen (9-17) kept the Flyers off the board until the fifth, when Lewis evened the score on an RBI single to center.

The Flyers would escape with the win, when a Panther fielding error with two outs in the sixth gave Lewis a 2-1 victory.  Drury had a chance in the seventh, with two runners on, and just one out, but were unable to score.

Miki Andrus went 2 for 2, and Dominique Salinas went 2 for 3 for the Panthers.  Drury left 11 base runners, and Lewis left four.

Lainie Schweikert (4-5) got the win for Lewis, going the distance, while recording seven strikeouts, and allowing eight hits.  Bolen walked just two batters, allowed four hits in six innings, and gave up two runs (one earned).

Hillenburg ends her career as the all-time hit leader (200) and runs scored leader (114).  Kjeldgaard finishes her career as the program's all-time wins leader (41), strikeout leader (473), complete games leader (68), and saves leader (9).
