MIDLAND, Mich. – The Drury women's tennis team advanced to the NCAA-II round of 16 with a 5-3 win at Northwood (Mich.) in the second round of the Midwest Regional tournament on Tuesday at the Greater Midland Tennis Center in Midland, Michigan.
The Panthers, seeded third and ranked 14
th nationally, improved to 22-3 while Northwood ended their season with a 21-3 record.
Drury won two of the three doubles matches and narrowly missed sweeping all three. Drury's tandem of
Chung-Yen Huang and
Elizaveta Tregubova were edged in a tie-breaker 9-8 (7-5) by Olesia Riabchuk and Anatasiia Kazub for the Panthers only doubles loss.
Julia Schepp and
Larissa Karl picked up a win for Drury as did the duo of
JiaQing Mo and
Lara Muller.
Karl picked up a quick singles win for Drury with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Carol Arnez-Mercado. Tregubova edged Kazub in a match-up that went to a tie-breaker in the third set, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 to get the Panthers within a point of the win.
Chung-Yen Huang also went three sets to clinch the win for Drury as she prevailed over Tetyana Pavych 6-7, 6-1, 6-2.
The Panthers will advance to the round of 16 on May 10-13 in Altamonte Spring, Florida, the final site of the NCAA-II national championship matches.
