KIRKSVILLE, Mo. –
Andrew Ballock's three-pointer from the corner as time expired in overtime gave Drury a 98-96 win at Truman State on Monday night at Pershing Arena in Kirksville, Missouri.
The Panthers won their seventh straight, improved to 12-2 and 5-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Bulldogs dropped to 10-6 and 5-2 in the league.
Drury owned a 16-point lead early in the second half, but Truman State chipped away and forced overtime outscoring the Panthers 40-31 in the second half.
The Bulldogs took a 96-95 lead over Drury with 4.7 seconds left on a driving lay-up by Jake Velky.
The Panthers, with no time-outs left, went the length of the floor and freshman guard
Conley Garrison found Ballock in the left corner and the junior from Eudora, Kansas connected on the shot as time expired.
"I'm really proud of our guys," said Drury head coach Steve Hesser. "There were a lot of things that went haywire late in the game, but they didn't drop their chin and they kept competing. We didn't give up, even when they got a bucket at the end with four seconds left."
Garrison led the Panthers with a career high 23 points. The Bolivar native went 8 for 11 from the floor and 6 for 8 from behind the three-point line. Garrison also led Drury with seven rebounds.
Julius Walker added 16 points, and
Isaac Johnson had 12.
Velky led the Bulldogs with a game-high 25 points.
Drury owned a 52-43 halftime lead after ending the first half on a 9-0 run.
Monday's game was the first of four straight road games for the Panthers. Drury is at second-ranked Bellarmine on Thursday. Game time is 7 p.m. (central) in Louisville, Kentucky.
