Lady Panthers open regular season in the Pops Duncan Classic
The Drury Lady Panthers open the 2018-19 regular season with two games this weekend in the Pops Duncan Classic hosted by Trevecca Nazarene in Nashville, Tenn. Drury plays Kentucky Wesleyan on Friday at 5 p.m., then faces the host team, Trevecca Nazarene, on Saturday at 3 p.m.
 
Drury will start the year ranked 9th in NCAA-II after going 31-3, 17-1 in the GLVC, and advancing to the Midwest Regional finals for the third straight season. The Lady Panthers return three starters and eight letter winners from last year's team.
 
Drury has one exhibition game under their belt having defeated Missouri Valley 93-55 on Oct. 28. Hailey Diestelkamp had 16 points, eight rebounds and five steals in the game while Lauren Holmes and Daejah Bernard both added 13 points each.
 
Kentucky Wesleyan went 15-12 last year and 11-11 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. They began this season with a one-point exhibition loss to Evansville, 81-80, on Oct. 28.
 
Trevecca Nazarene defeated NCAA-I Middle Tennessee State 88-71 in an exhibition game on Oct. 31 and followed that with a 77-31 exhibition win over Covenant College. The Trojans were 10-18 and 8-14 in the GMAC last season.
 
This year marks the third straight season Drury has played in the Pops Duncan Classic. The Lady Panthers are 4-0 in the event and last year defeated Trevecca Nazarene 71-57, then Walsh 85-55 the following day. Two years ago, Drury got a 75-72 win in overtime against Kentucky Wesleyan and beat Trevecca Nazarene 94-59.
 
Drury returns home after this weekend to host Southwest Baptist in the Bank of Bolivar Highway 13 Catfight on Tuesday at 5:45 p.m. in the O'Reilly Family Event Center.
