LIBERTY, Mo.— Andrew Ballock's 24-foot shot at the buzzer missed off of the front of the rim as Drury fell short 76-75 at William Jewell at the Mabee Center in Liberty, Missouri on Saturday.
The loss dropped the Panthers to 20-6 and 13-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Cardinals improved to 20-8 and 10-8 in the league.
Patrick Whelan scored on a lay-up that gave William Jewell a one-point lead with 15 seconds remaining, and it turned out to be the last points scored in the game.
Drury turned the ball over under their basket with five seconds left but got the ball back when the Cardinals missed the front end of a one-and-one at the free throw line. The Panthers, out of time-outs, went the length of the floor and found Ballock from 24-feet away in front of their bench but his shot fell short.
"We did some good things today, but we needed the ball to bounce our way one extra time, and we didn't get it," said Drury head coach
Steve Hesser. "We had a good season, but now it's time for March basketball, and we get to do that next week in Edwardsville in the conference tournament."
Doug Moore led the Panthers and had a double-double as the junior from Lawton, Oklahoma scored a career-high 23 points and added 10 rebounds.
Isaac Johnson added 14 points for Drury.
The Cardinals had four players in double-figures led by Emil Ostafiiciuc's 17 points. Whelan added 16, Pharroh Gordon had 15, and Keith Hayes came through with 14 points.
The Panthers went just 4 for 9 from the foul line while William Jewell hit 15 of their 17 free throws.
Drury is seeded third in the GLVC tournament next week. The Panthers will play sixth-seeded Southern Indiana in the quarterfinals on Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the Vadalabene Center in Edwardsville, Illinois.
