SPRINGFIELD, Mo.– A short-handed Drury team was edged by Missouri Baptist 24-22 in a dual at Weiser Gym on Tuesday. The Panthers conceded 12 points to the Spartans as injuries forced Drury to forfeit in two weight classes.
Drury built a lead early, though, as
Clay Singh, a 125-pound freshman from Kearney, Missouri, pinned Trenton Dickens in 48 seconds to give the Panthers a 6-0 lead. Springfield-Glendale product Chris Hansen then followed with a 12-5 win over Cameron Steinhoff in the 133-pound division and Jake Bryd (141) won by Fall at the 2:52 mark over Ben Leach.
"It was good to see our 125 and 133 get out there and have some good matches," said Drury head coach
James Reynolds. "We got a pin out of
Clay Singh, and Chris Hansen got his first dual win and avenged a loss from earlier this year."
After forfeiting at 149 pounds, the Panthers picked up another win as senior
Blake Clevenger (157) won a Major Decision, 13-3 over Steven Weathers.
The Spartans rallied for three wins, including one by Fall, and picked up another forfeit win at 184 pounds to take a 24-19 lead.
Senior heavyweight
Ben Melton gave closed the match with a win for Drury defeating Cory Flemming 7-3.
"Unfortunately, we had to give up some matches because we've got some guys beaten up," said Reynolds. "But we need them rested and healed up. We can't sacrifice short-term gains for long-term goals."
Drury dropped to 0-2 in duals this season while Missouri Baptist improved to 3-4.
The Panthers return to action on Thursday when they travel to the University of the Ozarks for a 3 p.m. dual in Clarksville, Arkansas.
