EVANSVILLE, Ind.—
Kamau Kinder hit two free throws with 2.3 seconds remaining that clinched a 76-72 road win for Drury at Southern Indiana on Saturday in Evansville.
The Panthers improved to 10-10 and 4-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference while the Screaming Eagles dropped to 14-5 and 6-3 in the league.
Southern Indiana had the ball in the closing seconds trailing 74-72 but the Panthers preserved their lead as forward
Tyler Clanton drew a charge against USI guard Alex Stein with four seconds left. Kinder caught the ensuing inbounds pass and was promptly fouled and sank both of his free throws to put the game away.
"I'm happy for our guys, they continued to hang in there," said Drury head coach
Steve Hesser. "We came out a little sluggish, and I thought we settled for too many three attempts in the first half. Then we played more downhill in the second half, and our offensive efficiency was much better after that."
Conley Garrison led the Panthers with 27 points and five assists. The sophomore from Bolivar went 9 for 15 from the field and 5 for 10 from three-point range.
Kinder ended the game with a double-double scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Drury opened the contest down 9-0 but recovered to take a halftime lead, 33-30. They never relinquished the lead the second half as they shot 58 percent in the final 20 minutes hitting 14 of their 24 attempts. The Panthers made 50 percent of their shots in the game going 27 for 54.
Southern Indiana shot 44 percent going 24 for 54 and were just 6 of 21 from three-point range.
Alex Stein had 18 points for the Screaming Eagles while Emmanuel Little had 15 points and 11 boards.
Drury returns to their home court on Thursday when they host Quincy for a 7:45 p.m. game at the O'Reilly Family Event Center.
