Panthers edged at Rockhurst 62-60

KANSAS CITY, Mo.— Rockhurst guard Curtis Lewis scored 25 points as the Hawks held off the Drury Panthers for a 62-60 win at Mason-Halpin Fieldhouse in Kansas City on Saturday.

The loss marked the fifth time this season the Panthers have lost in a game decided by a single possession and dropped their record to 7-7 and 1-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Rockhurst raised their record to 8-5 and 3-1 in the league.

The Panthers trailed 24-12 midway through the first half but rallied to pull within one at halftime, 29-28. Drury seized the lead early in the second half and was ahead 46-44 with 9:56 remaining when the Hawks responded with an 8-0 run. Rockhurst never relinquished the lead down the stretch and closed the game out to defeat the Panthers for the first time since Jan. 2, 2011 ending Drury's 14-game winning streak in the all-time series.

"Rockhurst made plays down the stretch to win, we made some mistakes on the defensive end, and they took advantage," said Drury assistant coach Brandon Kimbrough after the game. "(When we had the lead) we ended up just trading baskets and couldn't pull away."

Conley Garrison led the Panthers with 17 points while Andrew Ballock added 11 and Allen Billinger contributed 10.

Lewis, last year's GLVC Freshman of the Year, was the only double-figure scorer for the Hawks as he went 10 for 13 from the field and picked up three steals.

Rockhurst shot 46 percent from the field hitting 24 of their 52 attempts while Drury went 22 for 54 for 41 percent shooting.

The Panthers return home on Thursday to take on Indianapolis at 7:45 p.m. in the O'Reilly Family Event Center.
