SPRINGFIELD, Mo.— You would never know by the eye-popping 139 points scored by the Drury Lady Panthers in Saturday's exhibition game against William Woods, but DU didn't really get on track until the second quarter. Drury came away with a 139-74 win over the Owls in the Lady Panthers' second exhibition game of the year in front of 1,276 at the O'Reilly Family Event Center but trailed at the end of the first period.
William Woods led by as much as seven in the final two minutes of the opening quarter before taking a 29-26 lead after the first 10 minutes. Drury found another gear and outscored the Owls 38-10 in the second quarter, then produced 41 points in the third period topping the century-mark with more than 11 minutes left in regulation.
Paige Robinson had 22 points while
Kelsey Winfrey scored 20 hitting 7 of 10 shots and going 6 for 8 from three-point range. Freshman
Mia Henderson added 19 points on 9 of 14 shooting from the field and seven Lady Panthers reached double-figures.
"I caught myself just watching this team at moments," said Drury head coach
Molly Miller. "It was so much fun to watch our intensity and passion.
"William Woods is a good basketball team," she added. "They came in here and weren't rattled. I had to tell our girls at the end of the first quarter that we had to keep the pressure and keep pushing the pace. And I think that pressure wore on (William Woods) a little bit. I believe we're going to see teams come at us like that a lot this year."
The Lady Panthers put up 92 shots and connected on 58 percent of their attempts going 53 for 92. They nailed 10 of their 29 three-point tries and were 23 for 27 at the free throw line. Drury also had a 49-28 rebounding advantage and grabbed 24 offensive boards.
Peyton Greenlee led William Woods with 17 points.
Drury starts the regular season on Friday as they face Simon Fraser in the CCA Division II Tipoff Classic in Anaheim, California. Tipoff is 10:30 am (Central time) for the first of three games in the event. The Lady Panthers take on West Texas A&M on Saturday and Montana State-Billings on Sunday in the season-opening event.
