Drury's big second half sends Panthers to the GLVC semifinals

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.—Trailing by 10 at halftime, the Drury Panthers managed to turn around their quarterfinal game against Indianapolis and advance to the Great Lakes Valley Conference semifinals with a 71-65 win over the Greyhounds at the Vadalabene Center in Edwardsville, Illinois on Thursday.

The fifth-seeded Panthers earned their 20th win of the year improving to 20-10 while Indianapolis, the number four seed in the tournament, fell to 19-10.

Drury was behind by as much as 12 in the first half and trailed 37-27 at the intermission shooting just 33 percent from the field in the game's first 20 minutes.

But the Panthers set a different tone in the opening seconds of the second half getting a three-pointer from Conley Garrison, then a steal from Andrew Ballock led to a lay-up that sliced the Greyhounds lead in half.

"Give credit to UIndy as they did a really nice job all game long in their offensive schemes," said Drury head coach Steve Hesser. "They put us in mismatches, and they have good three-point shooters. In the first half, we didn't play as hard, and we didn't make some of the shots that we've been making recently.

"But we survived that, and I thought that 5-0 run to start the second half energized us. It was a battle the rest of the way and did we what we needed to do to advance."

Garrison, held to three points on 1 for 8 shooting in the first half, ended with a game-high 20 and hit five of his six three-pointers in the second half. The sophomore from Bolivar added seven rebounds. Kamau Kinder added 19 points while Andrew Ballock had 12.

After going 5 for 17 from three-point range in the first half, the Panthers hit 8 of their 11 attempts behind the arc in the second half to finish the game shooting 46 percent from long-range hitting 13 of 28. Drury shot 43 percent for the game making 23 of their 54 attempts.

While Drury shot better in the second half, their defense turned up the pressure as well. The Panthers shut out the Greyhounds for more than five minutes in the second half blanking Indianapolis from the 11:36 mark of the second half to 6:22 remaining. Drury took their first lead of the game during that span on Conley Garrison's three-pointer with 7:14 left.

Trevor Lakes and Marcus Lathum both had 17 points to lead Indianapolis.

Indianapolis shot 49 percent in the game hitting 23 of their 47 tries, and the Greyhounds were 10 for 23 from three-point range. It marked only the second time this year Drury has won when their opponent has shot a higher percentage from the field.

Drury's 20-win season marks the 11th time in Steve Hesser's 15 seasons the team has reached that total.

The Panthers will play the winner of regular-season champion Lewis and eighth-seeded Truman State in the semifinals on Saturday at noon at the Vadalabene Center in Edwardsville, Illinois.
