Panthers extend winning streak to six with 4-0 win over Maryville

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.— The Drury Panthers stretched their winning streak to six games as they shut out Maryville 4-0 at US Baseball Park in Ozark on Saturday.

Drury improved to 21-17 and 14-8 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference while the Saints had their six-game winning streak snapped and fell to 18-16 and 15-7 in the league.

Panthers starter Kaleb Schmidt (2-2) carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and worked seven shutout innings allowing just three singles and two walks with five strikeouts. Saturday's game was Schmidt's second start since returning from an injury that had kept him out for nearly a month. Alex Austin worked two innings of relief for Drury and struck out five to close the game out.

"Kaleb pitched like a number one starter and pitched like he did in his first few outings of the year," said Drury head coach Scott Nasby. "Last week, his ball was running and cutting, and he couldn't control it. Today he had better command, and that's why he pitched so well – he was able to control that movement."

The Panthers scored all of their runs in the first two innings. Aaron Mann drove in a run with a double in the first inning, and Brandt Olllinger's double in the same inning brought two more runners home. Jackson Dierenfeldt led off the second inning with a triple and scored on Cole Dunham's sacrifice fly.

"We had some nice extra-base hits early," said Nasby. "They didn't give us any free bases until the ninth inning – they didn't issue any walks until the ninth, didn't hit a batter, and they didn't make an error. We had to earn all four of those runs."

Cody Creed (4-4) pitched a complete game but took the loss for the Saints going eight innings allowing seven hits, with only two coming after the second inning, four runs and one walk with six strikeouts.

Drury's three-game series against Maryville continues with a doubleheader on Sunday. Game one is scheduled for noon at US Baseball Park in Ozark.
