ST. LOUIS, Mo.— Four Drury errors proved costly as the Panthers opened a three-game series at the University of Missouri-St. Louis with a 10-0 loss in eight innings on Friday at the UMSL Baseball Field in St. Louis.
The Panthers dropped to 22-19 and 15-10 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference while the Tritons improved to 8-30 and 7-18 in the league.
The first four runs allowed by Drury were unearned as UMSL scored a run in the first inning, another run in the second, and two more in the fourth. A Drury error in the first two frames helped account for both early runs and two Panthers miscues in the fourth also played a role in the Tritons gaining a 4-0 lead.
UMSL starter Jon Mahanay (1-2) pitched eight shutout innings allowing seven hits and no walks while striking out six.
The Tritons had a 7-0 lead going into the bottom of the eighth and ended the game with three runs in the inning. Two runs scored on a single by Tom DeCero and UMSL finished off the Panthers with an infield hit by Jarrett O'Brien that scored DeCero from third base.
The Tritons banged out 12 hits as Derrick Freeman went 2 for 4 with three RBI's and a double, and DeCero went 2 for 3 with a double while driving in three.
Aaron Mann and
Brandt Ollinger both went 2 for 3 at the plate for Drury.
Kaleb Schmidt (2-3) took the loss for the Panthers as he lasted 5.2 innings giving up seven hits, seven run and three earned runs with two walks and two strikeouts.
The two teams conclude the three-game series with a doubleheader starting at noon in St. Louis.
