William Jewell edges Drury on Senior Day 3-2

OZARK, Mo.— The Drury Panthers were held to four hits, and William Jewell got a run in the eighth inning to escape US Baseball Park with a 3-2 win on Drury's Senior Day on Sunday afternoon in Ozark.

Drury dropped to 26-21 and 18-12 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference while the Cardinals improved to 18-28-1 and 12-18 in the league.

William Jewell starter Thomas Hennelly (4-2) fired a complete game going nine innings allowing four hits and two unearned runs with four walks and seven strikeouts. Drury's only extra-base hit came from their first hitter of the game, a lead-off double by Brant Schaffitzel.

"(Hennelly) spun off-speed stuff non-stop and we didn't do a good enough job of putting those in play," said Drury head coach Scott Nasby. "When you don't make adjustments throughout the game, it can turn into a pretty quick day."

The game, in fact, lasted only two hours and five minutes and the Panthers contributed to that with good pitching performances and solid defense that helped keep them in the game. Drury played error-free and got assists from right fielder Clayton Engel, who triggered a relay-throw resulting in a runner gunned down at third base in the fourth inning, and he part of a double play in the sixth with a catch and throw to the plate that kept the score tied at 2-2.

Hunter Becker went seven innings and surrendered just two runs on five hits while striking out five. Alex Austin (3-3) took the loss as William Jewell broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the eighth on a two-out, RBI-single by Trent Bollman.

Drury threatened in the bottom of the ninth as they had two runners on base, but Hennelly got an infield pop up to end the game.

The Panthers conclude the regular season next weekend with a three-game series at McKendree. The two teams will play a doubleheader Friday at noon, then a single game on Saturday in Lebanon, Illinois.
