SPRINGFIELD, Mo.— Reigning NCAA Division-II Player of the Year
Hailey Diestelkamp etched her name deeper into the Drury record books on Saturday afternoon as she surpassed the 2,000 point mark in career scoring and helped the number one ranked Drury Lady Panthers to a 93-58 win over the Maryville Saints at the O'Reilly Family Event Center.
The win moved Drury to 21-0 overall and 12-0 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
Diestelkamp, a senior from Owensville, Missouri, had a team-high 20 points, giving her 2,011 for her career, and she pulled down 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double on the season.
"She's a club of one," said Drury head coach
Molly Miller. "She's now started the two-thousand point and one-thousand rebound club here at Drury. An elite player and one of the best the ever put on a Drury uniform."
After challenging the Lady Panthers in the opening quarter and trailing just 21-20 after the period, the Saints had difficulty overcoming Drury's intense defense in the second ten minutes of action and managed just six points as Drury went on a 21-6 run to grab a 42-26 advantage at the break.
"We've always talked about single-figure quarters, and that's been our goal," said Miller. "I thought our bench did a really good job too of coming out and getting stops. That's our momentum, our defense, and building on it."
In addition to Diestelkamp, who passed the 1,000 mark in career rebounds on Thursday night, the Lady Panthers for the game got double-digit scoring from sophomore
Paige Robinson with 17, junior
Lauren Holmes with 12 and freshman
Alana Findley, who added 10.
Mary Barton paced the Maryville (11-8, 6-6) scoring with 13 points.
The Lady Panthers hit on 32 of 62 shots, including 10 of 25 from three-point range for 52 percent and limited the Saints to 17 of 56 shooting for 30 percent for the game. Drury also outrebounded the visitors 49-27.
The win was Drury's 58th straight regular season victory, and they've now won 49 consecutive games in the GLVC, as well as 49 straight wins at home, the second-longest streak in NCAA-II women's basketball.
The Lady Panthers remain home for their next encounter when they host Lewis in a 5:45 pm game, Thursday, February 6th, at the O'Reilly Family Event Center.
