SPRINGFIELD, Mo. –The Drury softball Panthers earned a split to wrap up action at the DU Invitational, winning 10-2 over Wayne State before falling 1-0 vs. Newman in the nightcap at Thompson Field on Sunday.
In the opener, RBIs hits from
Abbey McAteer and
Grace King came through with RBI hits in the opening inning to put the Panthers up early 3-1 vs. Wayne State. Drury tacked on four runs on six hits in the third inning to put more distance between them and the Wildcats, 7-1.
Wayne State added a run in the top of the fifth, but Drury answered with three runs in the bottom half off the inning, which included six walks.
Kinzy Mathis led DU with a 2-for-2 game and scored three runs while driving home two RBIs.
Lauren Beier (2-3) pitched all five frames to earn the win and had a pair of strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Newman needed just one run, which they got in the opening frame on an RBI single to pick up the win. DU had a chance with two runners on and just one out in the seventh, but the Jets were able to pull of a double play to finish the game. Pitcher Anna Veltien (4-3) went the distance and allowed five Panther hits in the shutout.
Devin Hale went 2-for-3 with to lead all Drury hitters.
Kasey Cazares (4-4) had six strikeouts and received the loss.
The Drury softball team returns to action on Sunday, March 8
th when they will travel for a non-conference pair at Missouri Western with first pitch set for 2 p.m.
