Panthers break out with a doubleheader sweep at UMSL

ST. LOUIS, Mo.— The Drury Panthers picked up their first two wins of the season as they swept Missouri-St. Louis in a doubleheader winning game one 11-0 and game two 14-3 on Wednesday at UMSL Field in St. Louis.
 
The Panthers improved to 2-6 and 2-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference while the Tritons dropped to 3-01 and 1-5 in the league.
 
Drury took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back in their 11-0 win against UMSL in the first game of the midweek doubleheader.
 
Clay Engel gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead on an RBI groundout in the top of the first to start off the scoring. Drury added a run to the lead in the top of the third with a bases loaded hit by pitch from Riley Herron.
 
The Panthers broke the game open in the fourth with Brant Schaffitzel driving in two on a double before Nikko Calabro hit his first homer of the season to score Schaffitzel. The home run extended the Drury lead to 7-0. D.J. McNew hit his first home run of the season in the fifth inning as the Panthers went up 8-0. Drury added three more runs over the last two innings to win the game 11-0.
 
The Panthers saw seven of nine starters get a hit on the way to the win. Ethan Owens, Schaffitzel, McNew and Calabro all had extra base hits for Drury.
 
Cade Waits (1-0) earned his first collegiate win spreading five hits across six innings while giving up no runs and striking out three.
 
Blake Jones (0-1) took the loss for the Tritons as he gave up four runs across three innings with two walks and two hit batters.
 
The Panthers continued their hot hitting en route to a 14-3 win against the UMSL Tritons in the second game.
 
Drury started with a 1-0 lead after the first inning for the second game in a row following an Aaron Mann RBI single. D.J. McNew added another run in the second inning with a sac fly that scored Nikko Calabro. The Tritons answered back with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning to pull within one.
 
Clay Engel extended the Panther lead to three with a two-run double in the third inning before being driven in on a single by D.J. McNew to put the Panthers up 5-1. UMSL scored a run in the bottom of the third to cut the Drury lead to three.
 
The fourth inning proved to be the difference maker for the second game in a row as the Panthers scored four runs to break the game open. Brant Schaffitzel and Aaron Mann both drove in a run before Clay Engel hit a moonshot two-run home run to put the Panthers up 9-2.
 
The Panthers would go on to score five more runs on the way to their 14-3 win.
 
The Drury offensive attack was led by sophomores Jackson Dierenfeldt and Aaron Mann alongside the senior Engel. Dierenfeldt went three for four with a double and four runs while Mann was two for four with three runs batted in. Engel was two for three with a double, home run and four runs batted in.
 
Cody Bahl (1-0) pitched his way to his first collegiate win giving up one earned run over four innings with four strikeouts.
 
Josh Shoemaker (0-1) took the loss for the Tritons as he gave up five runs over two and a third innings.
 
The Panthers return home for a four game conference series against William Jewell at U.S. Baseball Park. The series starts Friday night at 5 p.m.
