Illinois Springfield takes two from Panthers

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.— Sixth-ranked Illinois Springfield took two games from Drury on Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader at US Baseball Park in Ozark. The Prairie Stars won game one 14-5, then took the second game 14-4.

Drury fell to 9-17 and 9-13 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Illinois Springfield maintained their hold on first place in the Green Division of the GLVC, going to 23-3 and 19-3 in the league.

Illinois Springfield jumped out to a 2-0 in the first inning of game one, but the Panthers pulled even in the bottom half of the opening frame on a two-run home run by Aaron Mann.

The Prairie Stars offense never let up, however, as the Illinois Springfield took the lead back in the third on a two-run homer by Kal Youngquist. They added five more runs an inning later and ended the game with 14 hits, including seven for extra bases, while holding Drury to seven scattered hits and five runs.

Colton Hale (6-0) got the win for UIS, and Kaleb Schmidt (2-2) took the loss for the Panthers.

Illinois Springfield hit two home runs in the first inning of game two on their way to a 14-4 victory in the second game. The Prairie Stars ended the contest with 14 runs on 14 hits while racking up four homers, and four doubles.

Mann went 2 for 3 for Drury and drove in three of the Panthers four runs. Two runs scored on his third-inning single, and Mann sent another run home on a double in the fifth.

"We get a chance to play tomorrow. We need to show up and worry about the game at noon because that's the game we have to focus on," said Drury head coach Scott Nasby. "We can't lament about the last couple of games. We have to focus on the game at hand, and that's the next one tomorrow."

The four-game conference series concludes on Sunday with a doubleheader starting at noon at US Baseball Park in Ozark.
