OZARK, Mo.— 23
rd ranked Quincy opened their four-game series at Drury with a 13-2 win over the Panthers at US Baseball Park in Ozark on Friday.
Drury fell to 12-21 and 12-17 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Hawks went to 24-8 and 21-7 in the league.
Quincy starter Riley Martin (8-1) carried a no-hitter into the seventh before the Panthers broke through with two hits and two runs in the inning to also avoid the shutout. Martin, the nation's leader in strikeouts with 98 in 52 innings, retired the first nine batters he faced fanned 13 hitters in the contest.
Hawks designated hitter Lance Logsdon gave his team an early lead hitting a three-run home run in the first inning. He belted his second homer of the game three innings later and finished the day going 3 for 6 with five runs batted in.
Quincy led 6-0 going into the fifth when they broke the game open with six unearned runs.
Drury got on the board in the seventh with an RBI ground ball from
Collin Fraley that scored
Clayton Engel. They added another run on
Jackson Dierenfeldt's single that drove in
Nikko Calabro.
"I would have been nice to play nine innings and we had that opportunity," said Drury head coach
Scott Nasby. "(Martin) attacks you with a hard breaking ball and can throw in the low-90s. He's aggressive in the zone and is an experienced pitcher. We started to barrell him up a little in that last inning and if you can get to their bullpen that would help, but our defense and pitching tonight didn't allow us to be in that position."
The two teams continue the series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at noon at US Baseball Park in Ozark.
