SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Drury University men's swimmer
Karol Ostrowski put himself in position for a spot on Poland's Olympic Swim Team after tying for first place at his native country's national championship event in Lublin, Poland.
Caleb Carlson,
Kham Glass, and
Cole Vanden Hoek have also posted qualifying times to the United State Olympic Trials to be held next month in Omaha, Nebraska.
Ostrowski, a freshman from Strachochin, Poland, tied for the national championship in the 100-meter Freestyle with a time of 48.72. The time for Ostrowski was his first time under 49 seconds in the event, improving upon the 49.37 personal best he swam during the preliminaries.
Ostrowski's time was a "B" qualifying under FINA, the governing body of international swimming recognized by International Olympic Committee. Poland had nine swimmers finish under the "B" qualifying time, and their national selection committee will select who will compete for their country in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics in both the individual championship and the 4x100 Free Relay. Ostrowski's first-place tie in the event, however, positions him for strong consideration to the team.
In March, Ostrowski won the NCAA-II national championship in the 100 Free for the Panthers in Birmingham, Alabama. It was part of his five national titles this year that helped Drury to a national runner-up finish.
Kham Glass, a junior from Brandon, Mississippi, made the US Olympic Trials cut in the 50-meter Freestyle last weekend competing in the Rose Memorial meet in Kansas City. Glass was part of two Drury relay teams that won national championships in March as he helped the Panthers to titles in the 200 Free Relay and the 400 Free Relay. He finished seventh nationally in the 50 Free.
Cole Vanden Hoek posted an Olympic Trials qualifying time in the 100-meter Breaststroke. The junior from Flower Mound, Texas, earned his qualifying time on Sunday, posting a time under 1:03.29. Vanden Hoek had a fourth-place finish in the 200 Breast at the Great Lakes Valley Conference championship meet and was 8
th in the 100 Breast.
Caleb Carlson earned an Olympic Trials cut in the 50 Free last year prior to the 2020 Summer Games being postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Dixon, Illinois native completed his junior season with the Panthers this year and won national titles on the 200 Free Relay team, the 400 Free Relay team, and he was ninth in the 100 Breaststroke at the NCAA-II championships last March.
The preliminary heats for the US Olympic Trials are June 4-7, and the finals are June 13-20 in Omaha, Nebraska. The swimming competitions at the 2021 Summer Olympic Games are scheduled for July 24-August 1 in Toyko, Japan.
