Early offense propels Panthers to second round of GLVC tournament

EAST PEORIA, Ill.- The Drury Panthers held off Lindenwood for a 9-7 win in the opening round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon at the EastSide Centre in East Peoria, Illinois.

Drury, the number three seed in the tournament, improved to 26-14, while the Lions, seeded sixth, dropped to 23-14-1.

The Panthers advance to the winners' bracket semifinals and will play Friday at 1 pm against the winner of second-seeded McKendree and the number seven seed, Lewis. Those two teams are scheduled to play at 5:45 pm on Thursday.

Drury jumped out to an early lead scoring a run in the first inning on a single by Grace King, then one batter later, Megan Tersteeg hit a grand slam to left field that put the Panthers up 5-0. It was Tersteeg's first home run of the year and her first homer since her freshman season in 2018.

Devin Hale added a solo shot in the second inning, giving Drury a 6-0 lead. The Panthers increased the lead to 9-1 in the third, highlighted by a two-run double from Hale.

Drury errors in the top of the fourth got Lindenwood back in the game as the Panthers committed three miscues in the inning, leading to five unearned runs against Drury starter Haylee Van Deventer, who went 3.2 innings and allowed eight hits but only one earned run.

Karsyn Smith (10-1) got the win for Drury in relief, going 3.1 innings, surrendering two hits and one run with one walk and three strikeouts. Lions starter Amanda Weyh (12-8) took the loss.

Tersteeg finished the game going 2 for 3 with a home run, four runs batted in, and a stolen base, while Hale went 2 for 4 with a home run, a double, and three RBI's.

The Lions got home runs from Whitney Wendel and Ceairra Perez, but both were solo homers.

The win is Drury's first-ever victory in the opening round of the GLVC Tournament. In 2019, the Panthers won their first postseason games in team history as they won two games following an opening-round loss to 13th ranked Indianapolis. Drury's number three seeding in this year's tournament is their highest spot on the bracket since 2012.
