Drury opens season at home in Greestay Inn & Suites Tipoff Classic
The new-look Drury Panthers open the 2022-23 season in the Greenstay Inn & Suites Tipoff Classic on Friday and Saturday at the O'Reilly Family Event Center. Drury hosts Northwood on Friday at 6 pm in their season opener, then will face Lake Superior State on Saturday at 3 pm. Missouri S&T will play the first game on both days and will take on Lake Superior State on Friday at 4 pm, then Northwood on Saturday at 1 pm.
 
Chris Foster, entering his second year as Drury's head coach, brought 13 newcomers to the roster and will blend three returners. The Panthers went 10-16 last year, 7-10 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, and finished third in the West Division.
 
Like Drury, Northwood is re-booting their program with a roster that features 13 new players and just one returner. The Timberwolves went 5-21 last season and 3-16 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. On Nov. 3, they lost an exhibition game to Central Michigan 88-61. Northwood enters its first season as a member of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference in 2022-23.
 
Lake Superior State has 10 lettermen back from a squad that went 16-11 and 11-9 in the GLIAC. The Lakers are picked to finish third in the GLIAC and return fifth-year senior Kemon Bassett, who averaged 14.5 points in 19 games last year.
 
After this weekend, Drury plays at Rogers State on Wed., Nov. 16 for a 7 pm game in Claremore, Oklahoma.
 
Panthers in season openers
The Panthers are 20-6 in season-opening games in their NCAA-II era that started in 1995-96. Drury won their first game of the year last season in head coach Chris Foster's DU debut with an 84-69 win over Ohio Dominican in Big Rapids, Michigan.
 
Drury is 3-2 in the last five opening games, with a loss two years ago at home to Missouri S&T, 96-89, on Dec. 18, 2020. The Panthers played Lake Superior State in the 2019-20 opener in Nashville and defeated the Lakers 89-73.
