SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Drury's new-look roster got a positive start to their season on Friday with an 80-61 win over Northwood on the first day of the Greenstay Inn & Suites at the O'Reilly Family Event Center in Springfield. The game was the season-opener for both teams.
The Panthers took control with a 10-0 run midway through the first half and opened up a 36-25 lead at halftime. Drury shot 65 from the field in the second half hitting 20 of their 31 shots and outscored the Timberwolves 44-36 after the intermission.
"I was proud of our effort and I thought our guys were able to make some good adjustments during the game, especially in the second half when we were able to get the ball into the paint and get some easy baskets," said Drury head coach
Chris Foster. "I'm really proud of some effort stats as we got a lot of offensive rebounds (13) and had a lot of deflections."
Adam Moore led a balanced scoring attack with 16 points and eight rebounds in only 20 minutes. The graduate transfer from Quincy University went 7 for 11 from the field and 2 for 3 from three-point range.
Preston Cook and
Quenton Shelton both had 11 points for the Panthers.
Will Young led Northwood with a game-high 17 points.
Drury ended up shooting 50 percent from the field in the game hitting 34 of 68 shots. Northwood shot 48 percent from the floor, but went only 2 for 8 from three-point range and 9 for 16 from the free throw line.
The Panthers will play Lake Superior State on Saturday at 3 pm for the second day of the Greenstay Inn & Suites Tipoff Classic. The Lakers lost to Missouri S&T 90-89 in overtime on Friday in the first game of the event.
