Maryville gets free throw with 0.6 remaining to beat Drury by one

ST. LOUIS, Mo.—Maryville was awarded free throws with 0.6 seconds remaining and sank one to break a 66-66 tie and emerge with a 67-66 win over Drury on Saturday in St. Louis.

The loss dropped the Panthers to 2-6 and 0-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Maryville went to 8-2 and 3-1 in the league.

Drury tied the game at 66-66 with 10 seconds remaining on a lay-up by Brock Wakefield. After a video review that changed the clock from 9.5 seconds left to 10 seconds remaining, the Panthers knocked a Saints pass out of bounds with 1.4 showing the clock. Saints guard Jaeden Smith got to a loose ball on the ensuing in-bounds pass and missed a hurried attempt but was awarded free throws when officials called a foul on the shot against Quenton Shelton with 0.6 remaining.

Smith made the first free throw but missed the second. The Panthers, out of time-outs, could not get a final shot away.

The sour ending for Drury spoiled a comeback that saw the Panthers rally from 13 down in the second half to take the lead, 54-51, with 9:14 left on a Wakefield three-pointer. The game went back and forth from there and featured two lead changes and a tie in the final 1:27.

Adam Moore led Drury with 13 points, Shelton added 12 points, and Preston Cook had 10.

Ari Jackson had 19 points for Maryville.

The Panthers shot 44 percent in the game, going 25 for 57 while connecting on 9 of their 25 three's. Drury went just 7 of 15 at the free throw line.

The Saints made 27 of their 54 attempts from the field and hit 9 of their 17 three-point attempts.

Drury returns to the floor on Tuesday when they host Hannibal-LaGrange for a 6 pm game at the O'Reilly Family Event Center.
