Drury splits one-run games in doubleheader at Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The Drury Panthers split a pair of one-run games against Lindenwood on Saturday as they lost game one 5-4 but took the second contest 5-4 on Saturday in St. Charles, Missouri.

20th ranked Drury went to 29-12 and 14-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Lions moved their record to 23-18 and 12-8 in the league.

Lindenwood held off a Drury threat in game one for a 5-4 win. Down to their last at-bat in the top of the seventh, the Panthers scored twice to get within a run of the lead, 5-4, and had runners at second and third with one out. Lions reliever Niko Marshall got Lindenwood out of the jam to pick up the save as he recorded a strikeout and a pop-up to shallow left to end the game.

The Panthers took the final game of the series as they hung for a 5-4 win. The game was scoreless until the fourth when Lindenwood scored on a wild pitch to take a 1-0 lead. Drury seized a 4-1 lead an inning later, though, as Carson Shaver, Kaden Helsel, Brant Schaffitzel, and Nikko Calabro all drove in runs.

Wes Collins gave the Panthers a 5-2 lead with an RBI single in the eighth, then Drury held off Lindenwood threats down the stretch. The Lions scored in the bottom of the eighth and pulled within a run in the ninth. With the tying run on base, closer Nate Boyle got a ground ball to end the game for his fourth save of the year.

Tyler Bastunas (3-0) got the win for Drury going six innings, allowing five hits, two earned runs and four walks. Michael Cessna (0-2) took the loss for Lindenwood.

The Lions won three of four, marking the first series loss in conference play this year for Drury, but the Panthers ended the weekend still in the first place in the Green Division with a two-game lead on four teams all tied for second place as Lindenwood, William Jewell, Maryville, and Missouri-St. Louis are all 12-8 in league play.

Drury is back at home for a non-conference game on Wednesday when they host Missouri Southern State at 5 pm at US Baseball Park in Ozark. The Panthers then host UMSL in a four-game conference series April 29-May 1.
