3rd ranked Greyhounds edge Panthers twice on Sunday

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Third-ranked Indianapolis shut out Drury in game one, then broke a 2-2 tie with a pair of runs in the sixth inning of game two to complete a sweep of the Panthers on Sunday in Indianapolis. UIndy took game one 4-0, then rallied to win the second game 4-2.

Drury fell to 32-13 and 18-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Greyhounds improved to 41-5 and 21-3 in the league.

In game one, Drury nearly got on the board first as they put runners on first and third with one out. Lauren Beier lifted a fly to right field, and Abby Tiemann was thrown out on a close play at the plate to get Indianapolis out of the jam. The Greyhounds then struck with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth, and they tacked on an insurance run an inning later.

Kenzee Smith (21-3) allowed seven hits and four walks but struck out seven as the Panthers stranded 10 runners. Kristina Bettis (20-3) took the loss going six innings and giving up six hits and four earned runs with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Drury battled back to tie game two at 2-2 in the sixth, but Indianapolis scored twice in the bottom half of the inning to close out the day with a sweep.

Trailing 2-0 after five innings, the Panthers got back-to-back doubles from Rylee Kolb and Lauren Bierer to start the sixth and get on the board. A Greyhounds error put runners at first and third, and Gena Kulberg evened the game with a sacrifice fly.

Indianapolis answered, though, the bottom half of the frame. Tara Williams put her team back in front with a home run to lead off the inning. The Greyhounds added another run on a ground ball that followed three straight walks allowed by Drury pitching.

Karsyn Smith (6-4) took the loss for Drury, while Kenzee Smith (22-3) returned from her game one start to get the victory in relief.

The Panthers return home and conclude the regular season with two doubleheaders next weekend. Drury hosts Quincy at noon on Saturday, then Illinois Springfield on Sunday at noon at Thompson Field.
