INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.— Drury sophomore
Reese Schaaf had career highs with 27 points and 14 rebounds as the sixth-ranked Lady Panthers won at Indianapolis 78-70 on Saturday at Nicoson Hall in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Drury improved to 7-1 and 2-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Greyhounds dropped to 5-2 and 3-1 in the GLVC.
Indianapolis led by nine in the first quarter, but the Lady Panthers fought back to draw even late in the period and were down 18-16 after 10 minutes. Drury's momentum carried over into the second quarter and was part of a 20-4 run, helping the Lady Panthers to a 43-36 lead at halftime.
"I thought we started off flat," said Drury head coach
Kaci Bailey. "We had a light a fire in the first time-out, but I'm proud of our response. We knew this would be a game of runs and we were able to get a few stops put together and gave ourselves a cushion."
Drury led 60-54 going into the fourth quarter, and sophomore
Rhi Gibbons' five-point burst in the first two minutes of the period was part of a 7-0 run that helped the Lady Panthers to a 13-point lead.
"We were in a little bit of foul trouble and Rhi came in and had a couple of big lay-ups," added Bailey. "We tell our bench to stay ready because you never know when your name will be called and she was a huge spark off the bench for us."
Schaaf, meanwhile, hit a career high in points and rebounds for the second game in a row. Thursday at Lewis, the sophomore from El Dorado Springs had 21 points and 11 boards. Saturday, she eclipsed both marks, pouring in 27 points to go with 14 rebounds. Schaaf hit a pair of three-pointers, was 11 for 21 from the field, 3 for 4 from the free throw line, and added two assists, a steal and a blocked shot. She had 17 points in the first half and added another 10 in the second.
"We kept pounding it inside," said Bailey. "We knew they'd make an adjustment on Reese after halftime and I thought we handled that well. She's composed and she made some counter moves and rebounded."
Caitlynn Daniels put in 14 points for Drury and
Beth Matas Martin added 12.
Liv Becker had 15 points to lead Indianapolis.
Drury held the Greyhounds to 37 percent shooting from the field as UIndy went 24 for 65. The Lady Panthers shot 48 percent, hitting 30 of their 52 shots, and they made 8 out of 17 three-point attempts.
Drury returns home for their next game as they will host William Jewell on Thur., Dec. 7 at 7 pm in the O'Reilly Family Event Center.
