OZARK, Mo.— Drury overcame some early miscues to defeat Southwest Baptist 4-3 and complete a four-game series sweep of the Bearcats at US Baseball Park in Ozark on Sunday.
The Panthers won their fifth straight game improved to 20-12 and 11-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Bearcats fell to 7-23 and 3-9 in the league.
Southwest Baptist took advantage of a botched pick-off attempt and scored two runs in the first inning as Sal Jacobo's single drove in runners from second and third. Drury got on the board in the second, but the Bearcats added a run in third on another Jacobo single to take a 3-1 lead.
The Panthers pulled within a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI double by
Luc Fuller, then Drury starter and reigning GLVC Pitcher of the Week
Jack Jones found his rhythm. Jones retired 12 batters in a row from the third into the seventh inning, and the Panthers played error-free after committing three in the first three innings.
Drury took the lead in the seventh with picking up a hit.
Brooks Sunny started the inning reaching base after being hit by a pitch and scored from third on a wild pitch.
Wes Collins provided the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly that scored
Luke Burk to give the Panthers a 4-3 lead.
"I think the big thing today was that on the mound, Jack was able to overcome some of the miscues we had early and not have an inning blow-up," said Drury head coach
Scott Nasby. "Jack started getting ahead of guys and beating them with his fastball. When you establish your fastball on a hard day to hit, then you can have success."
Mason Majors and
Tyler Bastunas pitched the eighth and ninth for Drury and Bastunas closed out the game to earn his first save. Jones (4-1) got the win going seven innings, allowing seven hits, three runs and one earned run with no walks and five strikeouts.
Drury is back on the field on Tuesday when they host Pittsburg State at 5 pm at US Baseball Park in Ozark.
