SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Drury wrestling opened its ninth season in program history at the Falcon Open, hosted by Friends University in Wichita, Kan., on Saturday.
Will Kuster went 3-1 in the Elite Division, while
Joe Kuster and Nathan Brower won division championships in the Amateur Division.
Will Kuster, competing in the 165-pound class, won by Technical Fall over Blaine Christo from Morningside, 22-5, then defeated Griffin Mitchell from Fort Hays State by Major Decision, 14-1. After a loss in the quarterfinals, Kuster closed with an 18-1, Technical Fall win over June An from Wayland Baptist.
Nate Brower won the 184-pound division in the Amateur Bracket. The freshman from Nixa, Missouri, went 5-0, pinned his first opponent, then won three times by Technical Fall. In the championship match, Brower won by Fall in 4:12 over Rodney Trotter over Labette Community College.
Joe Kuster went 6-0 to win the 157-pound class in the Amateur Bracket. Kuster won by Fall in his first two rounds, then earned a Technical Fall victory, followed by a Major Decision win in the quarterfinals. The freshman from Jefferson City, Missouri, got a 9-4 win by decision in the semifinals over Cade Braun from Northwestern (Iowa). In the championship, Kuster won by Major Decision, 13-5, over Jais Rose (unattached).
Drury's 15 attached wrestlers went a combined 38-25 in their season opener on Saturday.
The Panthers take on Labette County Community College in a dual on Nov. 6 in Weiser Gym.
