SPRINGFIELD, Mo.— Drury capitalized on free bases and timely hits to overcome a five-run deficit, defeating Quincy with a score of 11-6 on Saturday.
Â
The victory gave Drury the series win, with the Panthers taking three of four from the Hawks and improving their record to 14-12 and 12-4 in conference play. After the loss, Quincy now rests at 10-18 and 7-9 in conference action.
Â
Quincy had built a 5-0 lead by the fifth inning until the Panthers offense exploded for ten runs in the bottom of the sixth. The scoring barrage came after the Hawks walked three straight Drury batters to start the inning. An error would lead to a run scoring for the Panthers and kept the bases loaded with no outs. The Hawks then walked two more batters and hit another before
Connor Bain broke the game open with a double down the right field line. After the dust settled, the Panthers had scored ten runs with only three hits, giving Drury a 10-5 lead after six innings of play.
Â
The Hawks and Panthers each scored one run in the seventh inning, with the Drury run coming on an RBI single by
Wes Collins. The Panthers would cruise through the eighth and ninth, clinching the 11-6 victory.
Â
Drury starter
Jack Jones (2-0) got the win for the Panthers, tossing six innings and allowing only three earned runs.
Zach McKinnis earned the save for the Panthers, throwing three innings without allowing an earned run.
Â
Drury will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Pittsburg, Kansas to take on Pittsburg State at 5 pm.Â
