SPRINGFIELD, Mo.— Drury rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win game two and salvage a split of a doubleheader against Rockhurst on Saturday at Thompson Field in Springfield. The Panthers lost game one 6-4, then came from behind to win the second game 10-9.
The Panthers ended the day 25-20 and 13-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Hawks went to 15-21 and 10-12.
Drury grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one, but Rockhurst scored four times in the third inning to take the lead. The Hawks added two more in the sixth and held off the Panthers in the late innings to secure the win.
Drury outfielder
Rylee Kolb went 3 for 3 with a double, a stolen base and two runs. The Panthers stranded six runners in the loss.
Drury trailed Rockhurst 9-7 with one out in the bottom of the seventh when third baseman
Victoria Garland tied the contest with a two-run home run. The bomb to left-center was her sixth homer of the season and gave Drury new life. After back-to-back walks that followed Garland's home run,
Brooklyn LaChappa ended the game with a single to center field that drove in
Maggie McKee from second base.
Garland finished the game going 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs and
Lauren Beier hit her ninth home run of the season as she went 2 for 3 with two runs.
Kristina Bettis (4-6) got the win in relief, while Avery Huffman (8-11), who was the winning pitcher in game one, took the loss in relief for the Hawks.
Drury's game two win marked the fifth time this season they have won in their last at-bat, but it was the first time this year they won when behind going into the seventh inning.
The Panthers play their final home games of the regular season on Sunday when they host William Jewell in a doubleheader at noon at Thompson Field. Following game two, Drury will honor their graduating players as part of the softball program's Senior Day.
