KANSAS CITY, Mo.— Rockhurst avoided a four-game series sweep against Drury with a 5-1 win over the Panthers on Sunday in Kansas City, Missouri.
The Panthers fell to 24-16 and 21-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Hawks went to 23-17 and 15-13 in the GLVC.
Despite the loss, Drury remained in sole possession of second place in the conference standings after Maryville's fourth-straight loss as the Saints fell to Indianapolis on Sunday. The Panthers are two games behind Indianapolis for first place in the league with eight games remaining on the conference schedule.
Rockhurst took an early lead with two runs in the first inning, and they added three more in the third. The Panthers held the Hawks off the board for the rest of the game but could only score one run as they put up a run in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly by
Tyler Bastunas that scored
Wes Collins.
Connor Bain and
Luke Burk both went 2 for 4 at the plate for the Panthers, and Drury hit four doubles in the contest but stranded 11 runners in the loss. Drury reliever
Zach McKinnis pitched four scoreless innings and
Luc Fuller pitched a scoreless eighth inning to keep the Panthers in the game.
The loss snapped Drury's six-game winning streak, but the Panthers won three of the four games at Rockhurst and have either won or tied in each of their seven conference series so far this season.
Drury returns to the field on Tuesday when they travel to second-ranked Central Missouri for a 4 pm game in Warrensburg.
