MARION, Ill.— Drury pitching contained the conference's best offensive team for most of their opening round Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament game against William Jewell, but the Cardinals scored a run in the 11
th inning and held the Panthers to two runs in a 3-2 win over Drury at MNT Dew Park in Marion, Illinois on Thursday.
The Panthers, the third seed in the tournament, dropped to 26-24 while William Jewell, seeded sixth, advanced to the winner's bracket semifinals at 31-20.
The game was scoreless through five innings until William Jewell broke through with a run in the sixth. The Panthers tied the game an inning later as
Landon Willbrand scored on an error. The Cardinals went back in front with a run in the eighth, only to have an RBI single by Willbrand even the game at 2-2.
The Panthers had the winning run 90 feet from home plate in the ninth as they loaded the bases with two outs, but Cardinals reliever Brogan McDougall got a strikeout to send the game to extra innings.
William Jewell took a 3-2 lead in the top of the 11
th on an RBI single by Dawson Tweet, but Drury started the bottom half of the frame with a single by
Max Elmer. McDougall (2-0) retired the next three batters, including the last two by strikeout, to end the game and win.
Zach McKinnis (2-4) took the loss in relief despite allowing just one run on two hits in three innings.
Cody Bahl was stuck with a no-decision after striking out 11 batters in eight innings. Bahl allowed seven hits and two earned runs while only walking one.
Drury will play Rockhurst on Friday at 9 am in an elimination game in the GLVC Tournament at MNT Dew Park in Marion, Ill.
