Drury falls in 11 innings to William Jewell in first round of GLVC Tournament

MARION, Ill.— Drury pitching contained the conference's best offensive team for most of their opening round Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament game against William Jewell, but the Cardinals scored a run in the 11th inning and held the Panthers to two runs in a 3-2 win over Drury at MNT Dew Park in Marion, Illinois on Thursday.

The Panthers, the third seed in the tournament, dropped to 26-24 while William Jewell, seeded sixth, advanced to the winner's bracket semifinals at 31-20.

The game was scoreless through five innings until William Jewell broke through with a run in the sixth. The Panthers tied the game an inning later as Landon Willbrand scored on an error. The Cardinals went back in front with a run in the eighth, only to have an RBI single by Willbrand even the game at 2-2.

The Panthers had the winning run 90 feet from home plate in the ninth as they loaded the bases with two outs, but Cardinals reliever Brogan McDougall got a strikeout to send the game to extra innings.

William Jewell took a 3-2 lead in the top of the 11th on an RBI single by Dawson Tweet, but Drury started the bottom half of the frame with a single by Max Elmer. McDougall (2-0) retired the next three batters, including the last two by strikeout, to end the game and win.

Zach McKinnis (2-4) took the loss in relief despite allowing just one run on two hits in three innings. Cody Bahl was stuck with a no-decision after striking out 11 batters in eight innings. Bahl allowed seven hits and two earned runs while only walking one.

Drury will play Rockhurst on Friday at 9 am in an elimination game in the GLVC Tournament at MNT Dew Park in Marion, Ill.
