Drury battles past Indianapolis in second half

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.— Drury used a 15-4 run late in Thursday's game at Indianapolis to beat the Greyhounds 80-77 at Nicoson Hall in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The Panthers won their third straight to improve to 9-8 and 4-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Indianapolis dropped to 10-8 and 4-6 in the GLVC.

Drury trailed 46-39 at halftime and was down 63-57 midway through the second half. The Panthers pulled even at 67-67 with 7:31 left, then took the lead on a Colin Hardrick free throw moments later. Brock Wakefield added a lay-up, and Hardrick converted on a drive to the basket, which put Drury ahead 72-67 with 6:32 remaining.

Drury held off Indianapolis down the stretch and the Greyhounds' three-point attempt with two seconds remaining was off the mark and sealed the win for the Panthers.

"I didn't think our offense was great in terms of shot-making, but we had 20 assists and only seven turnovers," said Drury head coach Chris Foster. "Unfortunately, I think four of those turnovers came late, but it all reinforces what we've been talking about with our guys. Our identity can't be that we win only when we just make shots. We've got to do other things to win and I thought we battled on the boards better and we got down and guarded them better in the second half."

Hardrick scored a season-high 23 points on 8 of 12 shooting, and the freshman guard added seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Zach Howell added 15 points and four assists, while Elijah Whitley chipped in 13 points.

Grant Disken led Indianapolis with 18 points.

The win was Drury's first against Indianapolis since March 7, 2019, snapping a five-game losing streak against the Greyhounds. It was also Drury's first win in Nicoson Hall since Feb. 6, 2010, as the Panthers had lost eight straight at Indianapolis.

Drury continues their road trip on Saturday when they play at Illinois Springfield at 3 pm.
