INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.— The Drury Lady Panthers came from seven points behind to start the fourth quarter to rally for a 58-56 win at Indianapolis at Nicoson Hall in Indianapolis, Indiana on Thursday.
Drury improved to 13-4 and 9-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Greyhounds dropped to 4-14 and 2-8 in the GLVC.
The Lady Panthers trailed 46-39 after three quarters and were down 51-48 with 4:26 remaining. Drury took a 52-51 lead with 4:18 left after forward
Sara Mendel scored on a tip-in and was fouled. After missing the free throw,
Makaiya Brooks grabbed the offensive rebound and converted a lay-up that put the Lady Panthers in front by one. Moments later, Brooks nailed a three-pointer to give Drury a 55-51 advantage.
Drury hung on from there as Indianapolis had the ball with eight seconds remaining, trailing 58-56, but came up empty on a shot from 12 feet out in the closing seconds.
"Before the third quarter, we told our team that we have to play our best basketball tonight in the next 10 minutes because we haven't been that good for the previous 30," said Drury head coach
Kaci Bailey. "UIndy played a great game and we had no answer for (Patricia Chikamba)."
Chikamba had 33 points, a season-high for a Drury opposing player, and added nine rebounds.
"We had no answer for her," said Bailey. "We tried to double her, but then they hit a couple of three's so we backed off the double-team. Her scoring 33 of their 56 points is crazy."
Drury outscored the Greyhounds 19-10 in the fourth quarter, the only period of the game when they outscored Indianapolis. The Greyhounds led for more than 27 minutes of regulation. Drury's win was their first of the year when they trailed with less than five minutes left.
Mendel led the Lady Panthers with 16 points and she added seven rebounds. Brooks finished with 11 points, including seven in the final six minutes of regulation.
Caitlynn Daniels added 10 points, four assists, and five boards.
Drury shot 41 percent from the field, going 24 for 58. The Lady Panthers were 3 for 13 from three-point range and went 7 of 14 from free throw line. The Greyhounds shot 38 percent, hitting 24 of 64 shots, but were held to 4 for 15 shooting in the fourth quarter.
The Lady Panthers continue the road trip on Saturday when they travel to Illinois Springfield for a 3 pm game.
