KANSAS CITY, Mo.— A late surge by Rockhurst lifted the Hawks past Drury, 72-59, at Mason-Halpin Fieldhouse on Saturday in Kansas City, Missouri.
The Panthers fell to 6-6 and 1-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Rockhurst won their sixth straight game and went to 10-3 and 4-1 in the league.
Drury led for most of the game and built a 32-23 lead at halftime. Rockhurst pulled within a point of the lead six minutes into the second half and built on their momentum midway through the half when Brian Hawthorne hit a three-point, then grabbed a steal and scored on a lay-up to give the Hawks a 53-50 lead.
The Panthers stayed close, and trailed 59-56 with 3:53 remaining, but Rockhurst held Drury to three points down the stretch and connected on free throws to put the game away.
"I thought we guarded better than Friday night, and I like our approach," said Panthers head coach
Chris Foster. "We didn't do a great job of communicating and they got some easy baskets to start the second half. We were in a position to start the half to build on the lead and go up by 12 or 15 and instead, they got back in it."
Hawthorne finished with a game-high 17 points and added eight rebounds. Rockhurst guard Jesse White added 16 points and Dan Carr contributed 12 points and 14 rebounds.
Drury guard Colin Hardick had his second double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 boards, while
Logan Applegate added 14 and connected on four three-pointers.
Saturday's game was originally scheduled for Sunday afternoon but was moved up a day with the threat of winter weather impacting the Kansas City area.
The Panthers return to the floor on Jan. 9 when they play at Lincoln for a 7:30 pm tipoff in Jefferson City, Missouri.
